Professional Synopsis
  • Commenced employment in 1973 with specialist heating and ventilation contractor, Alfred Grindrod & Co Ltd, as an indentured technician engineer apprentice working on mechanical services design, estimating and supervision of various commercial, education, health and industrial building projects.
  • Joined Crown House Engineering Ltd in 1980 as a Contracts Project Engineer with responsibility for management of the installation phase of pre-designed schemes for hospitals, military buildings, office buildings and industrial facilities. Project management and liaison between client, main contractors, specialist sub-contractors, suppliers, site labour and financial management of the project.
  • In 1982 joined Sheffield City Council, Works Department, Heating Section as a Technical Officer, promoted to Senior Officer in 1984, with responsibility for design, procurement and project management of various schemes for client departments including schools, nursing homes, high rise housing, museums, swimming pools and sports facilities.
  • Promoted to Sheffield City Council, Design & Building Services in 1985 as a Group Leader, responsible for a group of engineers and the design, specification and supervision of building services in council-owned buildings, including group heating schemes, tower block accommodation, offices, schools, sports centres, art galleries and elderly people’s homes.
  • In 1987 became self employed working on a contract basis as a Senior Design Engineer and Project Manager for Edward Pearce & Associates, Usher & Partners, Crown House Engineering, Henry Boot Construction Ltd, Preston Lee Chambers, Drake & Scull Ltd and Building Design Partnership.  Responsible for design and project management on various schemes including a prison, retail premises, banks, vehicle distribution depot, car manufacturing plant, hospitals, colleges, semi-conductor manufacturing plants, military establishments, pharmacy manufacturing and commercial premises.
  • Joined Building Design Partnership in 2000 in a staff position undertaking the role of Senior Design Engineer, Engineering Team Leader and Project Manager, as necessary, for various schemes including:
    • New PFI Hospitals at Hexham and John Radcliffe Hospital Oxford. Refurbishment of clinical departments with new engineering services for hospitals in Sheffield, Doncaster, Bradford and Northolt.

    • New building for Leeds College of Music including music practice rooms, recording studios, multi purpose performing arts auditorium and ancillary spaces.
      Health & Safety Laboratory, various schemes for industrial premises and scientific test rig buildings.

    • Crown Courts utilising high levels of insulation in the building fabric and ‘termodeck’ heating and cooling ventilation system via airways in the precast concrete planks.
      Refurbishment and new engineering services for churches, territorial army buildings and vehicle workshops, commercial buildings.
  • In 2003 appointed as Principal Building Services Engineer at Mott MacDonald Sheffield, with responsibility for mechanical services engineering team, design and project management for Barnsley Schools PFI bid, further education college at Clowne, various local authority schools, defence estates premises and healthcare sector work.
  • In 2004 joined JSH Consulting Ltd as a Director with responsibility for mechanical engineering design, project management and developing business within the healthcare sector.
    • Projects undertaken include the engineering services feasibility study, design, specification and engineering services project management for a number of healthcare schemes at hospitals in Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster and Grimsby.  The schemes include departments and facilities for; Gamma Camera and CT Scanners, Theatre Admissions Unit, Sterile Services, Post Operative Surgical Unit, Isolation Rooms positive and negative pressure, Surgical Wards, Medical Wards, Older Persons Mental Health Wards, Pathology, Ultrasound, Endoscope Decontamination Unit, Operating Theatres and Pharmacy Aseptic Units.

    • Engineering services infrastructure and plant replacement projects include; HVAC chiller plant,  operating theatre air handling plant, medical gas plant and pipelines, domestic water legionellae precautions works, steam boiler plant hotwells, steam heating calorifier plant rooms,  steam mains, LTHW boiler plant,  LTHW heating  and chilled water site wide distribution. 

    • Other recent projects include educational facilities for Sheffield Hallam University, various industrial premises and scientific test rig buildings for Health & Safety Laboratory at Buxton and leisure facilities for Sheffield International Venues.

    • Specialisms include steam, air conditioning, medical gases, building management systems and HVAC controls, the design and project management of hospital engineering services, education establishments and research facilities.
    • Vocational courses include completion of the CIBSE Air Conditioning Inspection for complex buildings.
